The Alambic virtual printers accept data in PostScript format, therefore the printer driver installed on the Windows client must generate PostScript output. We recommend you use the Adobe PostScript Printer Driver (AdobePS) freely available on the Adobe web site. The PostScript Printer Description file Alambic.ppd which comes with Alambic is to be used when defining Alambic printers.

To install an Alambic printer, run WINSTENG.EXE, the Adobe PostScript Driver Setup. After skipping the welcome screen and accepting the license you are presented with the Printer Connection Type screen:

Select a Network Printer and click Next to go on to the Network Path screen:

Enter the IPP URL of the printer you just defined in CUPS. On the above screenshot, the printer's URL is http://192.168.1.1:631/printers/Alambic. Click Next, the popup below will appear:

Click Yes to install the Adobe driver, the Printer Model Selection screen is then shown as below:

The ALAMBIC.PPD should be selected, the Alambic 1.0.2 printer will then appear on the screen and should also be selected. Press Next to go on to the Printer Information screen:

Clicking Next will go on to the Setup Information screen:

By selecting Install, the new Alambic printer will be installed onto you client machine. A final Printer Configuration screen will be shown:

You can safely select No and click Next here as the Alambic printers offer no options at configuration time. The next screen will tell you the setup has completed successfully.

Click Finish there to complete the Alambic printer installation. One last screen will ask you if you want to reboot your computer now or later, choose the option which best suits your needs at the time your are installing the new printer (the printer should be usable without rebooting your computer).

Your new Alambic printer is now defined, you can test it from any of your application. You can view a test page printed from a Windows 2000 client computer onto an Alambic printer.

The above setup example is for a Windows 2000 machine. For earlier versions of Windows, the IPP URL is not understood, you must then use a LPR port to access the printer using the LPD protocol. Please make sure you configured the CUPS LPD frontend before setting up your LPD printer.

We hope we can now count you among our happy users.
